PostSubject: Ugly fabric challenge   Tue Nov 24, 2009 5:23 am

Remember, a few weeks ago, I said I had entered an ugly fabric swap on another board. I couldn't show my finished project because they are being voted on. I thought you all might like to see what other people made with their ugly fabrics! Here's a link to that site. There are some pictures on this thread, but there's a link to more detailed pictures. http://boards.hgtv.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5894011632/m/5121070614

December 1st, I'll tell you all which one was mine.

Karol...thanks for sharing this with us and please let us know what number you were!

Lots of ingenious uses for this ugly fabric! It looks like it was a fun challenge!

How did this challenge work...did you send money and someone shipped fabric or did you all buy from the same website?

HAHAHA that is really funny. Was that any ugly fabric? There was one cat fabric that more than one person had. Orange seems to be prevailing, but some of them might be red and just don't photograph well.

We all mailed money (I can't remember how much...something like $2) for 1/2 yard of the same fabric. She mailed it back to us and we had a certain amount of time to make something. We had to use 90% of our fabric and not allowed to buy anymore.
This was the fabric:

It was orange! Looked red-like until you put red next to it...and nope, it was orange! And ugly.

edited to add: here is my friend Penny's description of the fabric. too funny!

Oh, Karol, thank you!! I'm so glad you shared more of this with us. Penny's description of the fabric made my day - - I think she's the Dave Barry of the fabric world! Some of the projects gave me laughs, too, while others made me think, "OMG, someone put that much work into using that fabric?!?!?"

I can hardly wait till you can reveal your design to us.

I'm not sure it's ugly, but it sure is tacky. You may be a Redneck if you bought this fabric.

Well, apparently I was confused. She ended the voting today.

I tied for 2nd. This is what I made.

My 'logic' was...it was an ugly fabric, if I cut it into small enough pieces and sew them back together...it will look like a different fabric!

So, I made a postage stamp quilt. I cut them into 1 1/4" pieces.

It was a labor of love!!!

I made a grid on paper, colored in squares and stitched them together.

There are 3364 squares. It is apprx. 52"x52"

I kinda liked the way it turned out! A funny story. Before I cut a thing, I counted the number of 'ugly' squares I would need. Something I NEVER do!! Then I calculated how many 1 1/4" squares I would get out of 1/2 yard of fabric. Would you believe me if I said I got the EXACT number...both counts!!! I could not believe it! That's why I added those black squares...just to make sure I had enough!!

anyway...this is it. Here is the link to the winners.

Oh no, Karol! Your quilt was what I was thinking about when I wrote: "while others made me think, "OMG, someone put that much work into using that fabric?!?!?"

You have proven, beyond any doubt, that you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!!

Your quilt is just the cat's meow!!

Mary Ann.... I knew it was ME you were talking about....'Oh no, Karol! Your quilt was what I was thinking about when I wrote: "while others made me think, "OMG, someone put that much work into using that fabric?!?!?"'

But it doesn't look ugly all cut up small...does it?? from a distance...I don't think it looks like stupid cats playing poker!

The person who hosted this swap is a friend of mine...I told her next time I am going with her to pick out UGLY...I'm sure I can do a better job!!

good job Karol. Next time I'm at the LQS, I'll try to see if they have some really ugly fabric. That would be a blast to do an ugly fabric challenge on this forum. Sounded fun!

That is fantastic. Great design Karol.
I have a fabric so ugly I would have to put it in the food processor to cut it up small enough to look good! lmao

You could make a quilt and call it "Ugly Smoothie" lmao lmao

Luvs we are going to hold you to your promise to find ugly fabric and do a challenge on here!!! police

Karol you did a fantastic job, first thing I thought when I saw the quilt was M for Meow, love it. You know Redworker 2002 did that challenge too, Ive asked her to send me her pics so I can post them here, her interpretation is so totally different to yours, they are soooooooooo cool. Well done ladies

Karol! I was stunned that you cut all those pieces!!!! Unbelievable!!!!!! Shocked And then sewed them!!!! How on earth did you keep them going in straight rows! AMAZING!!!! I was in that challenge too. I got the lowest number of votes! 1 (it wasn't mine...I voted for the ironing board cover...I thought it was such a hoot! Very creative.) I'm NancyC20 on that board. Mine was the cat that didn't win. Actually I made the cat for the APRON that I made from the cat fabric. I had a teeny weeny bit of fabric leftover that I'm making a potholder for the hostess (don't want her to forget, or NOT HAVE any of this purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfectly ugly fabric.) I'm one of the few people in the Challenge that thought it was cute. I wouldn't have bought it, but I LOVED doing the Challenge. Made me think of the Project Runway ideas. It was so much fun...I'd love to do it again!!!! Well, congratulations on your tremendous win, Karol. Now this board has the highest and the lowest of the projects! hahaha
