PostSubject: Xmas Tree Block Swap 2011   Sun Aug 07, 2011 10:20 pm

Was flipping some old magazines etc and came across a pattern Id admired. Thought it might make for an easy swap block. I took a photo of the magazine picture. Would anyone be interested? If so I will arrange for someone to host it to keep postage costs and time turn around down. Swapping could get a nice mixture or reds and green trees we could decorate if you wanted. Let me know what you think

Cute! I'd be interested....do we find our own xmas tree block or use that one? I'd like it either way!

We'd use the one in this pattern, its a white rectangle with red borders added then the tree & star appliqued over the top. The tree blocks are finished size 10" x 16" it says, they have used rail fence blocks as fillers which are 10" x 8"

Okay, everybody. Sit down. Swallow that mouthful of coffee/tea/drink of choice. Brace yourself.

I will host this swap.

Well I didn't. I just kept reading and drinking and hit hers and yours right when I was swallowing.
I think it went up my nose. Shocked lmao

I am in too. If Tracy can find time to host it, I guess I can find time to sew 'em. Very Happy

It will be so fun having you in this swap. I have swapped to Aussie/Tasmania, and Canada, so will be excited to include Germany. Thumbup

PostSubject: Re: Xmas Tree Block Swap 2011   Mon Aug 08, 2011 2:39 pm

Okay, so Gimpy Cat will send the pattern info - it looks like there are 12 blocks and 21 strips in the rail fence blocks (which We Who Math know are cut 8 x 2").

I'd like to propose that we each make 12 blocks. Send all of your blocks (including the one for yourself) to me PLUS a 2 x (at least) 8" strip of the red you use in your block for each block.

That's 12 blocks, 12 strips. This way we can all incorporate the red fabrics into our rail fence blocks and make the quilts all cohesive and such. coolsmiley

Use all the same red in one block but if you want to send 12 blocks each with different red backgrounds, go for it.

So, I'm assuming fusible applique, not hand-done. Yes? No? If it is fusible, I'd suggest that we do NOT sew it down, just fuse to the background.* Each person can sew down as they see fit (some of us like buttonhole stitch, some will sew down while quilting, etc.).

*I'm told that fusible webs don't stick as well to unwashed fabrics. I don't care much one way or the other (I don't prewash normally), but I think we need to decide whether or not to prewash. Are we concerned about the reds running/fading? If we all *do* decide to prewash, I need to make a REALLY REALLY BIG REQUEST:

NO fabric softener or dryer sheets, please. Stinky-stinky-stinky. tigger And many of us have sensitivities to the chemicals in that stuff.

I'm going to check with Sindy at Fat Cat Patterns to find out how she works with international swappers - she's a pro at this stuff so I'll take her advice. Very Happy I'll write another massive post later to share what I've learned about postage, 'k?

So, what you need to do next is to chime in: Pre-wash or not? Everything else sound okay so far?

I never prewash, but if we are worried about the reds it might be wise to.... and some people like to get the sizing out of the fabric... I am for whatever the majority wants to do...

DITTO with TMM on all of the above!

One question because my brain isn't working(I am at the dd's house and I'm going nuts about right now!) are we getting a pattern to work with here? And we're to make 12 blocks each?

Just making sure I don't miss anything right off.

And Tracy, thanks "sew" much for hosting.
