PostSubject: Baby Hats   Thu Oct 18, 2012 11:57 am

I usually only crochet when it gets colder but this year the crochet bug bit me a little sooner. Since I have spent all year nearly just working on scrap quilts I decided to start with my little scrap balls of yarn. I wanted my projects to have a purpose so I made preemie and newborn hats for the local hospital. I delivered them Tuesday and the reaction of the nurses made it all so worth it. They were having a ball playing with the little hats and oohing and aahing over them. I was very careful to make each hat extra cute, coordinating colors and adding embellishments so they would not look like leftovers. Keep in mind that the preemie hats in the 1st 5 pictures will fit an orange.

I even made some pumpkins, acorns and elf hats for the holidays.

The afghans all had matching hats and were donated to the Hope pregnancy Ctr and then I had a couple of super soft caps and about a dozen or so fingerless gloves that I took to the cancer treatment clinic. All in all, it was a good day.

TxM, where did you find the patterns? (Please tell me you use patterns) The Pine Ridge Reservation group is having a push for baby shower items in January. Warm hats would be a great gift. I'm a pretty good crocheter, and it would be fun to make hats, but I have to have patterns to follow.

Every one of your hats is adorable and the new parents will be thrilled! You done good, Friend!

Thanks ladies. I enjoy making things like this. I prefer to have a purpose for the items I make. I like giving them away. Come on, if I didn't give things away, I wouldn't be able to continue my hobbies. So very win win to donate.

Patterns. Oh my goodness where to start. When I googled free crochet baby hat patterns, I was overwhelmed, literally.

This is a very cute little boys hat, with or without the band. Leave off brim, you have a girl's. Add a little ribbon or flower.

This one can be either or:

Gotta lotta time? Check this out:

The first two links above were newborn. If you want preemie, or animal hats, just google. Just have a lot of time to look. And no, 50+ hats later, I no longer use a pattern. winking

Thanks, but y'all give me too much credit. Embarassed Like I said, it keeps me sane and I like knowing there is a good use for my work.

You know Helen, I had the same hope, that a cute little hat will bring a smile to some worried parents at such a stressful time. I showed some friends some of the hats and someone said "Oh you should sell those". I just smiled and shook my head no. How on earth could I sell a hat to someone who's baby was born premature and is fighting for it's life? No way, not happening. I couldn't look myself in the mirror knowing how little yarn and time it took. They need hope, not more bills. cry2

I think that a bit of care, coming from a total stranger is like an unexpected warm hug and people need that and those little babies, starting life with a little loving gift, its a wonderful thing you have done hug08

I find crocheting easy and knitting not so. And I have had knitters tell me that crocheting is hard. All you need is a good teacher. Any yarn shops around?

I do some crocheting, I like it, it's relaxing for me. I have been working on some dih cloths. I want to learn to knit and have thought about taking a class at JoAnn Fabrics. One of these days I'll learn. My mom did both and I wish I would have learned to knit from her. She did teach me to crochet and I have made lots of afghans over the years and some baby blankets.

Oh I admire you for making afghans Marian. I have made a few but find it such a chore to finish them. I have such a short attention span and I like little projects.

TxM - thanks to your influence, I bought yarn yesterday for baby hats. Over the weekend I showed my girls pictures of your hats. They all thought they were wonderful. Laura mentioned, though, that Sam would love to have a red Angry Birds hat. I found a pattern at etsy that I paid for and downloaded so last night I started the red bird hat. Then I'll move on to baby hats to donate.
