The Modern Mini Quilt Challenge (not here) from a couple of years ago set the sizes as no smaller than 6x6" and no larger than 24x24".

I went over to our Small Quilts and Wallhangings (abandoned?) topic and that sent me on a trip down memory lane... I wandered through my old photos and saw that I've done a BUNCH of small/mini quilts. And I fell in love with them all over again. Smitten

Okay, now I'm getting excited. I need my partner's name so I can get-ta designing.

On a related note, our guild's show challenge is "Build a Bridge" and it's to be no larger than 20x28". I started digging around for ideas, but all that's stuck with me is that old song by the Judds, "Love Can Build a Bridge". Nice song and all, but a bit too sappy for me at the moment. geek

I'm more inclined to say, "Build a bridge and get over it." †Unfortunately (or fortunately), a design for that lovely sentiment has not coalesced in my brain.

I dont think mug rugs and placemats count but I know many people use mini quilts for table toppers, display them on the back of chairs etc. I found this on a competition guidelines site from Co

Definition: a miniature quilt is a scaled down version of a larger quilt. In other words, all
elements of a miniature quilt (blocks, borders, sashing, etc.) should be reduced in size to
a proportion that matches the size of the quilt.

Then I found this "The American Quilterís Society defines mini quilts as no larger than 24Ē in both width and length, with all aspects of the quilt reduced in scale."

Betweens gave these guidelines too " Blocks are no larger than 6in and the quilt itself must be under 25in all around."

It seems that we should aim to create a mini quilt about 24-25" square so everyone will get a similar size when swapping.

There are lots of eye candy ideas to be seen HERE

I just the first one, 6th row down, delectable mountains with the spectacle wearing doggie †hahaha

If anything Ive said is incorrect Betweens will clear it up when she is on next

Dont forget, your local library most likely has some miniature quilt books you could check out for design ideas and inspirtation too!! :readingsmilie:

I have to confess, Im already frustrated by this swap and it hasnt even started! We are booked to go camping this winter over at Maria Island, we leave July 6th, perhaps the 5th and will gone 5 days. We are staying in the penitentiary and its the perfect opportunity to hand piece a mini quilt, at least start working on it, idyllic setting, peaceful, I need a hand work project to do thats small and will fit in my back pack and we are going camping too early to have a good sense of my partner, aughhhhhhhhh!!!!

You ladies are awesome thanks for the support on describing what a mini is and Gimpy is right the purpose is so that the size is equivalent to everyone in the work that is done it in, I will say though workmanship also means embellishing, quilting, I love the most lovely Mug rug and Hug from Fiberbabble I never use it but display it with a wonderful Crafted mug that was given to me.

We are talking about mini`s though I have them on walls, tables in my bedroom in my tv room, no wall space in the quilting room. though. I will get the pictures up this weekend I want to take pictures and make an album

Well I guess at your title says, we are talking about MINI QUILTS not small projects in general such as mug rugs etc, its good to get it all clear and definative. I hate wondering if its this or that or the other, I like to know exactly what it is. I just popped back to say Ive been looking at the site you gave in the link, some beauties there but LOT OF FREE PATTERNS for mini's woo hoo, way to go, here is the link to the

FREE MINI QUILT PATTERNS

I just requested 3 or 4 mini quilt books from my library too Cheesy Cheesy when my body isnt so sore, Im going to go raid my sewing room and look at books in there, see what else there is and thinking, seeing as Ive been fancying a mini, maybe I will choose and take the 'ingredients' with me to Maria Island and make one for myself, you know, that would counted as practice, a warm up, thats doing a good deed for my partner to be isnt it? Oh my, arent I thoughtful? lmao lmao lmao

how big will each block be when trimmed Deb? You are doing a beautiful fine job, looks great. Are you going to sash or piece blocks to set them?

I am not sure yet I keep thinking they should be surrounded by mini pinwheels. They will be cut down to about 3in. It takes me a day to do one of these that is with working and all.

you will be the only one that knows who you have we should not know till we open the gift.

I am not sure if this will take the place of the Secret Santa I am not sure if anyone wants to do that swap but this one I thought would be nice for a pre christmas gift.

When my neighbor takes her furniture back, I'm going to take that off the wall and finish it. I already have the long wonky braid ready.

Oh, its not in the picture but she had to clear out a separate bedroom for her DH to sleep while recovering from open heart surgery. Its been two months and he's going to be OK. So young for this to happen, he is 43. I'm glad he can take over caring for the dogs and everything. I was glad to help but I was sore and exhausted for those weeks.

I can hardly wait to find out who my partner will be. Mamu's mini Christmas quilt is on the wall over my cutting table. She does such awesome work, would be a shame to put it away for most of the year.
