I just started My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira for my library book club. It is about a midwife during the Civil War who wants to become a doctor.

Following myself here, just want to add now that I am further along that I am really enjoying My Name is Mary Sutter. The librarian picked a good one this time.

I'm working on Graveminder by Melissa Marr. The editor in me notices a few unnecessary passages, but overall, I'm enjoying it (it does move kinda slowly, though).

The audio reader, however, is, errrr, entertaining.  There are some words that she says just a leeeeetle differently, like she knows phonetics but hasn't actually heard the word out loud before. The dialog and descriptions don't always flow because she pauses briefly (like a comma) in seemingly random places. While I don't think I'd ever be a(n audio) reader, I think that one should read ahead before turning on the microphone - like, sometimes her tone is "he snapped at her" when the story suggests, "he said gently".

Editor ear has definitely changed the way I 'read' an audiobook. coolsmiley

It's kinda weird... if someone in the same room as me  reads something aloud, I can't follow it. But my books are almost exclusively audio these days (and have been for years). Part of that is purely about time - I just do not take the time to sit and read a book; I'm always multitasking. Mostly it's driving, and often it's sewing, but even when I'm stirring a pot on the stove (BORing) or knitting I've got a book going. If I want to sit & knit in my comfy chair and Mr. W. is watching something on TV that doesn't interest me, in go the earbuds.

Occasionally I'll run across a book that is ruined by the reader and I'll end up abandoning it ("The narration was full of so many pregnant pauses I thought my ovaries were going to cramp."). Occasionally I'll find a book that I feel is much better in print, usually because it's full  of such rich or provocative scenes that I want to slow down and savour it - or I want to pause occasionally to process what I've read. Anthony Trollope's The Warden or Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union are two that come to mind ("I found that while my imagination was picturing something described I missed out on the next cluster of pretty words, making the narrative seem rambling and disjointed.").

Kindle offered a deal on a few prepublication books, so I tried Crow Hollow by Michael Wallace.  WOW!  This is set in the winter of 1671, starting in Boston.  A crown representative has been sent to investigate warfare between previously peaceful neighboring Indian and English settlements.  The result is a nail-biting adventure.

That sounds good, MN.

I am reading Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah for our library book club. It is about 2 daughters who have a very cold, unloving mother and are also having relationship problems. I thought I wasn't going to like it, so sad, but now I am almost to the end and finally hearing the mother's story and it is really good. But it is very sad but it is getting much more heartwarming.

I just finished The Quality of Silence by Rosamund Lupton, enjoyed it, something different , here is the blurb for the book, almost the whole thing is set in the unending darkness of Alaska in winter in the cab of a truck.

On 24th November Yasmin and her deaf daughter Ruby arrived in Alaska.

Within hours they were driving alone across a frozen wilderness

Where nothing grows

Where no one lives

Where tears freeze

And night will last for another 54 days.

They are looking for Ruby's father.

Travelling deeper into a silent land.

They still cannot find him.

And someone is watching them in the dark.

Now Im half way through The Bourbon Kings  by JR Ward. I asked the state library to purchase 4 titles and they did and they all arrived at once so I have some books to get through, about 7 piled beside my bed needing to be read

Tami finally got wi fi hooked up and my tablet too, now I have to figure it all out, never had one before. Do have a couple of addresses for free books now. Will probably take awhile with all this other upset going on too, but I'll get it sooner than later.
