PostSubject: Quilt Alongs 2009   Tue Oct 07, 2008 3:51 am

Here is the spot to put your ideas for next years quilt alongs. In the past only one was held but I know different people like to do different things, be it applique, pp, piecing or perhaps even a theme such as holidays, animals, love etc. Some might prefer a block every 2mnth, some one a month, lets see what you can come up with.

We can set up multiple quilt alongs for 2009 and hopefully meet everyones wishes. Also, please let me know if you would like to manage a quilt along here, we will need people to keep each group going and sorted out. Thanks winking

Next year I am going to start doing a quilt journal each month. When i read your message Gimpy, I thought that maybe others maybe interested in starting one too. Its very easy and and there are hardly any rules! I have all the details if anyone else is interested.

I had been thinking about this for a while and trying to come up with something fun and different. I was thinking that we could do seasonal wallhangings...you know, a little one for each month. I was thinking about 12" square like a block but finish it for display. (Or if you wanted you could save them up for a quilt).
A row quilt would be fun too as long as the rows weren't too fat.
Anyone interested in either of those?

I like the block idea Bearfoot.

I don't know how the row quilt would work. Where would we get the patterns? Would we all make the same rows?

I remember you and some others made a row quilt. You sent it to each other to add rows to. Is that what you mean? That sounds like a lot of fun and I've thought of suggesting that, but it's kind of scary. Hoping that you're adding something someone else will like to their quilt.

In the Jennifer Chiaverini books they did a round robin that sounded like fun too. It was like your row quilt. I have thought of suggesting that too. The way I envisioned that was each person would make the center of theirs and then send to the next person to add something.

You couldn't have too many people in these or it would get too big. I would just like a wall size to lap size, but would go along what everyone else decided.

I might get up my nerve if we had enough people who are interested.

Polly would you like to start a new thread here and tell us about the journals? That would be great, then you will know as time goes on how many would like to do it.

Barb your seasonal block idea sounds great too, are you thinking that you have your spot on the wall where it hangs and each month you simply put the matching block up? Get to feature 12 different little quilts but not take up too much space? That idea has always appealed to me. I recall Ellen did one once, the theme for it was a tree, each month the same tree was changed to reflect the month, be it fall or may day etc. A house could be cute too, there was a free house pattern years back on HGTV for this kind of thing, each month different.

What is the row quilt idea you are thinking off Barb? Can you explain that idea?

Cottonpicker some of the ladies here have participated in a row robin, they had a ball. Off the top of my head here are some of them that did it - Betweens (organised it I think), Golo, Breezepines and come to think of it Im sure Bearfoot did it too. Anyway you could ask them about it fir some more info. If you got a good number of people wanting to do it you could divide them into smaller groups.

You could both start up tpoics about your ideas if you like, same as I suggested to Polly and see what interest each one gets. We dont have to have big groups to have fun. Love your ideas.

I guess I already suggested doing a towel each month.... you can applique, pp or do a block on a towel... each towel could be something for the season or holiday... azn

Oh I like the towel a month idea, quick and simple project but achievable. So often I pine and wish I could join things but I know I just dont have the time to do it or any hope of achieving it, towels are something Laura and I could do for sure. Do you want to do it if we get a few people? Seasons and holidays would be fun, such a fast cheery way to decorate the house.

Maybe it wouldn't have to be every month, but for the main holidays... like Valentine Days, Easter, 4th of July, School Days, Halloween, Xmas... I would be happy to host it, but anyone with a lovely idea can also do it...

I think most of us no matter how hard pressed could manage one a month, even if you ironed the pieces on and hand sewed them on road trips, at a sports game, drs waiting room etc. It sounds great Golo

Bonnie how is it attached to the foam? Do you hang the piece of foam or display it on a plate stand? Most curious here! I came across a Nancy Halvorsen pattern for 3 little wall hangings, not very big, fusible appliqued, one for each season, they are quite cute, were in a book called cottage charms if anyone has it to look at.

well they are very easy to make you take a piece of styro foam, about 2 1/2 to 3 inchs thick the the size you want draw your pattern on it and then take your material and stick it in, a butter knife works well, you take and tuck the fabric into the lines of the pattern, and push it in, you put a big piece of materail on back and bring it around to the front as a border, if you like you can poke a hole in the back and hang it or you can sit it on a shelf your choice, I took a bunch of them one time and hung them side by side and made a large quilt on the wall looked great.

Bonnie I was working out in the vege garden most of yesterday and all day I kept wondering about doing something like this with laura for xmas, thinking a santa face maybe, simple lines. Will have to find some foam - I had two pieces and last week covered them in muslin and made them into pin boards LOL, will have to find some more.
