PostSubject: Summer Row by Row swap   Sat Mar 05, 2016 3:52 pm

Swap Info - April 9th, 2016

2 Rows each to be designed and swapped with other participants

If you have started your rows or have you idea firmly in your head please share your basic design element so others can avoid doubling up, you could just say - eg: beach balls

Gimpy Cat
- I have no idea what my rows will be at this stage

TxMary - 1)Picnic
2) the word "Summer"

Memaw - Flowers, bees & lady bugs

Linda2b - Beach theme

Cut off date to swap patterns April 30

Ok, a summer theme is our next row by row swap, sharpen your pencils and get out your paper - time to think summer designs! You could design a row featuring the things summer means to you, or the things you dream about doing in summer, whatever takes your fancy.

Each person will design a row for the quilt, it doesn't matter how high it is as long as its 30 1/2" long. It can be applique, pieced, I guess even embroidered (?). Then we will share the designs with the others who have joined in and each person will make their own rows for their own quilt. Its going to mean gluing or taping some paper together to get the length depending what style you choose to use when designing your row and then we will have to post/email the pattern for our rows to each other.

If you can manage to make a fabric version of your design and post a photo here, that would be awesome, I know time can get hard for people so if you cant make a sample row, you can at least get yours designed and post a photo of your design here. So, who's going to join the summer row by row fun, come on, its easy peasy!!!

Summer ideas, what can you think of? What does summer mean to you, what do you do, what do you dream of, what do you like? Here are some off the top of my head summer things, what can you add?

Butterflies, bees, hives, insects - ladybugs etc
Fish, boats, lakes, rivers, pools and ponds, fishing, kayaking
Beach - huts, swim suits, flip flops, flippers, beach balls, towels, animals, waves, boats
Hiking, mts, forests, camping, hot air balloons
Ice cream, picnics, bbq/grills, sunsets
Holidays, family fun, hammocks, bird baths

these are all just random things people associate with summer that I can think up off the top of my head, what else can we add to the list for ideas?

County Fair.
Flowers
I design a row of wavy flowers, but for some reason, the appliqued stems and leaves disappeared, so this is a partial image.

Each triangle leg is twice the size of the hexagon edges.

They do look like pinwheels, especially with the missing leaves. Very Happy I just bought Logan one and he has had so much fun with it. Would be pretty done in shiny fabrics but I don't have any and would probably not like working with it anyway, but it would be pretty!

Helen, I am not sure you left out a single summer thing!

Oh and since I didn't state it, I am officially in this one too. Thumbup

Memaw.  I can't draw, but Have been called an artist.  I KNOW you are an artist.

I redrew my flower row because my fotor app ignores the appliqued leaves and stems.

Of course, for someone who wants a row with lots of work in it, Roy's dragonfly would do.

I love the background fabric on Roys row, its just perfect. Memaw, you dont have to be a published colouring book creator to join in, hell, none of us are, we just have fun. When we did the winter rows, Marynel did her pp row designed on her computer and Redmadder did a log cabin row, so it doesnt have to be applique. My winter row I didnt have enough fabric so I pieced the background of the row then appliqued on top, lots of things you can do

Oh Mary Nell,  you give me way too much credit.   I am NO  ARTIST by any means.  I follow a PATTERN right down to the letter.... usually. lmao   There have been times when I do it MY way or the highway.    Shocked     But then haven't we all?     And this may be one of those times!    But I can't draw a straight line with or without a ruler!   lmao lol!   Just sayin'......

Armadillo's!!!!! You could hide a snake in the flower patch or out by the deck chair lmao lmao

Memaw, if you cant draw a straight line, may I suggest you design something curved? Flower petals, fat bumble bees etc, no straight lines to stress you out, just avoid the kites, boats and beach towels, they all have straight lines!!! lol!

There are lots of coloring pages you can download also.

Another thought: think picnic. Hot dogs, watermelon, lemonade, ants.

BTW, my college art prof shattered me my giving my drawing a terrible critique in front of the class, watching me for about 15 minutes and saying in complete astonishment, "You really are trying, aren't you?" But a nationally known expert looked at my needlework and offered to get me membership in the Canterbury (England) Broiderers' Guild. Many time, it is a matter of finding the exact presentation of your particular genius, or pushing through until your ability shows.
