PostSubject: 4th of July Row by Row   Sun Jul 03, 2016 3:25 pm

I am enjoying these row by Rows so much that I would like to do a 4th of July one. It seems to be a bit of an overlooked holiday for swaps, mostly because not all of our members are I the U.S. But I talked to Helen and she doesn't mind if we do one. And I am sure our other Aussie members will understand too. Is anyone else interested? Same rules as the other RxRs.

1.) One (maybe two) rows to design and share with other RxR participants.
2.) We are swapping designs only, not finished work.

If we get any takers, I will set a cutoff date. I know it is too late to have for this 4th of July but will be great to have for next year. Let me know. Very Happy

No problem. Just thought I'd put it out there. I have enough ideas to do one for myself when I finish the Halloween one.

TXM I will design one or two for the 4th of July but since the holiday is passed now, how about if we give ourselves a little more time? I like doing the rows but the last few have been with very short completion dates. I'd like to try and get some of the ones we've done made up. What do ya think?

I am not starting it right away...same reason, I have the summer and Halloween to finish. I want them at least appliqued. Helen designed a row with Uncle Sam hats just so you know not to do that. She doesn't have 4th of July but wanted to do a pattern. Obviously, she won't be making the quilt. I have a ton of ideas so let me know what you decide on so I don't duplicate again! lol!

It's funny, but I like the shorter completion dates. Especially when all we really are doing is designing, not sewing. Sometimes I think things go on foreeeeever. I know most people prefer the longer time frames. Guess I am weird, maybe a little A.D.D. Probably a lot. azn lmao

Whats happening with this swap? Its good to give some time for everyone to participate but if its goes on too long they get lost and develop cobwebs, remember, you can just design and post you row sketch, you dont have to have a sample made up, its better if you do, more fun but a design is just fine. Here is the row I designed for ya'll, my white fabric is Aussie with eucalypt leaves, had to add an Aussie touch!!

Gimpy, that one is great.
I am not up to sewing right now, but I really want to complete the Winter one before I move on. My local quilting partner and I are planning 4 seasonal quilts. I have the Fall one "Windows on Autumn" planned. She suggested one row should be our mountains (in log cabin format) in their fall coloring. Unfortunately, I will have to force myself to buy some fabric for that.

Years ago, I designed a needlepoint pillow for Mom to make. It was flag toting Teddy bears , called "waiting for the parade" I'll probably redesign that one.

Helen Love your row! I have a few more days of cleaning and then I will try to get one put together!
This hurricane has put me behind in so many ways! Not having a sewing room has too!

Finished this RxR awhile back but didn't get pics I guess. I will get pics of it as soon as I figure out my new camera.

I am now all caught up and have been making backings out of fabric in the "odds and ends" cabinet. I put larger pieces of fabric that have been trimmed from quilts or pcs that are left from making a quilt back, even yardage that I am not so crazy about anymore. I started to get rid of a bunch of it but realized I always need backs for stuff....wallhangings , the back (inside) of a quilted pillow top, backs of hotpads etc, so I gathered it all into one place. I have been making as much of the RxR's from my applique box and only using stash for the backgrounds so I thought I should use the odds and ends for the backs. I have made all eight backs, even though we haven't made quite all the RxRs. I even spent this morning piecing batting scraps together to use in these too. Managed to make five of them and only lack a little to make #6. Hopefully I will get a few quilts quilted and will be able to make the rest of the battings from the trimmings too!

I really dread when I have to trim all these after quilting and some of this fabric starts reappearing. Then it might be time for it to go!

Thats a great idea to isolate all the fabrics you dont want to feature and use as backing instead, I quite like pieced backings on quilts, so many of the old quilts have pieced backings, we ooohhh and ahhhh about the 'days of being frugal' and I often think "Ummmmm, why aren't we still being frugal?" When did the need to stop being wasteful happen? Did it coincide with the rise of the credit card, the throw away society we live in today is a result of hugely inflated commerce practices? Being frugal used to be something to be proud of, an accomplishment, magazines wrote about it, people shared their tips proudly. Dont you ever wonder which credit card company or department store was the one who brainwashed society into the negative belief that frugal means poor? Frugal means smart, competent, creative and logical, its a positive thing, not negative. I better get off my soapbox

I am swamped right now, but still think this is a good idea. I'll ponder the possibilities as I bind cop quilts.

Marynel, I think only Linda, Helen, and I are still making these...Helen doesn't celebrate the 4th and Linda and I already traded our patterns. Mine is done so I guess we don't need anymore more 4th rows. So carry on with your mission and don't add more to your to do list. Very Happy

Helen, I don't know how we got to this point. I think a lot of the propaganda the credit card companies put out worked on people who had struggled a lot, they were tired of struggling, they didn't want their kids to have to do without and it snowballed into kids growing up thinking credit is the way to go. Don't worry about tomorrow just get what you want today and they are passing this on to their kids who are feeling even more entitled......it just keeps going. I don't exactly pinch pennies but try to have a pretty good reason to spend one. When I do buy stuff it is because something broke and I have no choice, or it is something we have wanted/needed for a while and it is on sale. I try to buy on sale or used as much as possible. We re-use stuff all the time, Mac builds so much from found "treasures" and I try to waste as little as possible. I do not save every empty butter tub, I don't save all the plastic bags or newspapers or cardboard boxes....I don't want to be a hoarder but we try to recycle what we can which is hard in our area because the recycling programs here are sadly lacking. Society really needs to make changes but with all the signs right in front of us nothing is being done......I am afraid of the magnitude of disaster necessary to really get everyone's attention.

Here's my 4th of July. (sorry it's sideways)

Hard to see but my pinwheels (based on Linda's idea) are 3-D

My fireworks sparkle :)

I forgot to line the white but it'll have to do.

I love fireworks over water

Thanks I was really happy with it when I was done. I think it is the first one that won't need a lot of embellishing after it's quilted. I have yellow butttons to make "lights" on the buoys but that is it I think.
