Join me, my friends, in making the latest FatCat Patterns BOM, "Gnome for the Holidays".
You can keep me accountable and I can cheer you on. Win-Win!!

1 appliqued block per month for 10 months. That's all, just one block.
Granted, one block may be 8˝" and another may be 26˝"... but, hey! Just one block!
lmao

Click the pic and head on over to Sindy's BOM page to get the kick-off information, including fabrics, yardage, and cutting instructions*.

Then commence 'ta thinking. Undesided

To Be Continued...

Undesided Thinking...

What color do I want the background to be? Bright and white? Warm and creamy?
What if I pieced the backgrounds out of light scraps?
(okay, that's a Tracy thing, probably)

Do I want to chose the sashing and border fabric now, or wait until I have the blocks created?
(If you're asking WWTD? winking The answer is wait.)

Once you've made a decision on the background, here's my suggestion:

Cut out all of the background pieces.

WHAT??!?!! Have I lost my ever-loving mind?

Well, that's not important now... lol!

BUT here's my thinking:
If I cut out the background fabrics at the beginning, I have committed to this project more seriously than if I just stack the fabric together with the instructions. It's a financial investment - I can't steal the fabric the next time a sparkly chicken runs through my sewing room. It will be in sizes specific to THIS project.*

Oh, fer cryin' out loud, what's with the * ?

* I will be cutting out my backgrounds about an inch larger, then trimming them to the correct size after the applique is stitched down. Better safe than sorry for me!!

FB you were pondering pieced backgrounds, its not just a Tracey thing, I did a couple of blocks on this project when I started running out of fabric and I really wished that the whole thing was done with pieced background blocks as I really like them with applique

Darling wall quilt, Helen. I'm going to keep that pieced background block idea in mind - I like it.

FB I cut out my background at the beginning when I did Sindy's Christmas row by row and I'm almost done. I agree it keeps you committed to doing the project! I'm going to look at the instruction and start pulling fabric this week.
I do like Gimpy's pieced backgrounds, so will have to think about it! I have lots of light colored scraps that could work!

I'm not starting mine yet. I have a few other things going at the moment. My dear niece, who has a company called Cake by the Pound, sent me a marvelous cake for Christmas. When I saw the cupcake patterns on Fat Cat, I decided to make her a cupcake lap quilt. That should be rather simple to do. Also, I have also nearly finished making the blocks for a rag quilt to donate and I have some minor adjustments before I finish the borders on the barn quilt. I have a few other things started, but they can wait.

I got an email  from FatCat Patterns, there's an updated first month doc... I'm on my way to work, so I haven't looked to see what's changed - Linda, you may want to check it out before you start cutting!

I saved the instuctions...guess the first step is to print them out! I will check out the update too...got it this morning. Could see myself turning a scrappy backround into a real ordeal Undesided Maybe I shouldn't do that.

Helen, I really love that you only have a couple of pieced backgrounds. They really make a nice statement that way and don't over whelm the project.

I love this quilt. I hope I stick it out. I feel kinda, I don't know, "off". Not organised for sewing or something. Maybe its just my sinus headache. Or maybe it really is me. azn

I'm in. Tiny letters there, 2017 wasn't so great for me finishing anything. I think Memaw won the 'finishing' contest. Of course I like the pieced background. Hmmm, off course already. Thud

TXMary, how did you manage to send the sinus headache here? Knuppel Fortunately, it is getting better with the manuka honey wash my doc recommends.

I printed the new version, put the pages up to a light, and found NO difference. I'll ask Sindy.

From Sindy:

Some folks new to my BoMs, thought page 3 was the actual templates. Not a placement reference guide. After X amount of emails asking at what % to enlarge the page :) I changed the text. Page 3 of the instructions now reads -
These images are to give you a visual reference for patch placement on the blocks. They are not meant to be enlarged for templates. Each block will contain full sized patch templates.

Soooooo,

I wondered too but just used the updated ones.

I have my backgrounds cut...no piecing, just solid squares....I have an array of pretty colors to use...all out of my applique scraps....I can pull fabric as I go if I need anything but trying to work with the scraps as much as possible....pulled two snowflake fabrics...a light and a dark...for the borders... these fabrics are getting some age on them so I want to use them.
Everything is in a tub and ready to go.

TxM, sounds like you're getting your mojo back after all!

I might be in; will decide a bit later this week. I'm not an applique gal, but promised I would learn paper piecing this year and perhaps applique. And I always have Memaw nearby who can help me if I get into a jam. Which I will, of course. It is a beautiful quilt. I liked the effect of piecing a couple of blocks, but don't think I'd want the whole quilt like that.

Here's a LINK to Sindy's post about how she does her applique - she's demonstrating with the Gnomes. Head on over and have a look. She might use a technique you've never tried, or forgotten about... OR, you'll just get to look at happy pictures  Very Happy
