Bonnie..I'm doing them by machine. IMO..the edges will fray and it's a casual block so I think top stitching the flower bits down by machine will be the way to go?

I'm machine sewing mine as well. I do great with applique, but this is a little different for me. I want mine to look good! NOT that the rest of yours won't, please don't get me wrong. But I know how mine would look if I did them by hand!

:affraid: I'm afraide this is what some of you would be looking like and then wanting to say to me!angry

Breeze - I'm for sure doing mine on machine - straight stitch, 2 times around. I've never done any hand piecing. Would the stitching on by hand be the same stitch as used to hand stitch seams together for a piecework quilt? Of course, I don't know what stitch people use to do piecing by hand either. So, little old machine-stitchin' me is amazed at the thought! :)

Don't want to cause this to have an odd number of blocks for a quilt though. Let me know.

I have my fabric washed and ready to iron. I think I'll cut my blocks out tomorrow. I went and bought 4 yds. of cream fabric and will cut my blocks at 13 1/2". If I run out I'll just buy more!

I plan to cut out all my flowers sometime Friday. I'm watching two of our grandkids. I'm just as sure as anything they won't be having school due to all the ice and snow we received last night and today. We got 4" of snow and 1/2" of ice. It looks like a winter wonder land in our woods. I took lots of pictures, but until we get this computer running faster I won't be posting them. We have slow dial up and for anyone who has this, you know how long it takes to download anything! angry

Poor computer has a virus. I have a sledge hammer! Knuppel I can fix this thing and fix it good!

Last count we had 14 ladies doing this swap. :D

I have an IMPORTANT QUESTION for everyone... would you like to leave the leaves off for the swap and put them on yourself so that all your leaves are the same and you will know they fit into your 12 1/2" square.......???? or do you want them sewn on so your leaves will be all different????? UP to you... majority rules

That is a pretty block Golo. I have no preference about the leaves. Either way is fine with me.

My preference is for the leaves to be on when my blocks arrive. With all the talk about all the rulers we have, shouldn't we be able to plan on them fitting?!? lol! However, I'm sort of neutral on this - so if someone has stronger feelings one way or the other, I'll happily go with the flow! (at first I wrote "go with the floe" - does that mean I'd be on an iceberg??)

I'm OK either way with the leaves..but if we sew them on..do they butt up against the raw edge of the flower..or tuck under a bit..or a space in between the flower and the leaf? Without having a sewn flower block in front of me it's hard to tell how close they'll be to the edge once trimmed. Since you have the block put together Golo..does it look like it will be a tight squeeze?

My opinion only.........sew them on before you send out the block.

AOL had a good question. When you see the pattern (picture) I thought it looked like the leaves were spaced about 1/8 to 1/4" away from the flower. I think it looks great.

Looks like 13 are signed up.

I have laid out the leaves... cut all number E leaves.. I think one of the leaves (#G) is bigger that the rest... they have to touch the flower and it will be a tight fit.. I laid out the ruler and every leaf just hits the 12" mark... maybe the leaf should be made a touch smaller...or tucked under the flower a little . (yes I know one of the leaves is a little crooked...) Cheesy

I thought this would be easy! Now it's seeming a bit complicated? Undesided I noticed the pattern outline was a fairly thick line. Did you cut outside the line, Golo? What if we cut inside the line, just so the black outline was cut off?

Another thought would be that we cut the leaves to go with our blocks, but don't sew them on?

Golo, did you pin the flower in place before sewing? Did you have any trouble with it shifting around or "bubbling up"?

But, setting aside these minor concerns, look at how beautiful Golo's block is!! Oh what fun it will be to get a whole package full of these!!!

OH I want to have the leaves just sent, that way I can cut on the diagonal when I am piecing the flowers together. I wanted to do that with the bull's eye swap but since everyone signed in a corner, it was not feasible. If you want, would it be okay if maybe everyone signed one of their blocks NOT in a corner, maybe on the side or bottom, top.... that way I can do diagonals instead of the normal. I hope that is not too much work for anyone. If it is, bop me on the head Knuppel and tell me to shush it! :others-164:

PostSubject: Re: Tattered Garden   Thu Jan 29, 2009 10:50 pm

Cutting inside the black line is a good idea... I think I cut right on... I did freezer paper pattern, cut 4 at a time with the rotary cutter... I fold the fabric in 4ths to know where to lay the flower... no I did not do any pinning... I used a double needle for sewing around the flowers. I would be for sending the leaves along....and not sewing them down... signing on the sides is fine... I just finished a bullseye quilt done in cirlcles ... I cut my circles in 4's and made a totally different design so it never mattered where anyone signed.. it looked good ... I just saw a tattered garden done in the same way.. they cut their flowers in 4's and match up other flowers for a totally different look... and they didn't put the leaves on ... but I like the leaves.. Don't be discouraged... it really was easy to sew together... just go for it.... put the music on and enjoy....
