Fabric paints or pencils Empty
PostSubject: Fabric paints or pencils   Fabric paints or pencils EmptyWed May 27, 2009 4:08 pm

I have a black and white label I'd like to use on a quilt. I will be typing the information and adding it to the label and then will photocopy it on fabric that has been treated with Bubble Jet. The quilt I'm making is from a Brandywine Design (applique) book and there are labels in the back with drawings of the appliques.

Question: Has anyone used fabric paints or pencils to add color to fabric? Does it wear well? Does it smear? Any tips?

Thanks.

Linda,

You can print your label after treating it with bubble jet, no need to photocopy.
I just finished a label yesterday this way.

1. cut fabric 8 x 10
2. soak fabric in bubble jet for five minutes
3. drip dry, then iron well
4. iron fabric onto shiny side of freezer paper which has been cut a pinch under 8.5 x 11
5. with rotary cutter trim top of paper so it is flush with fabric.
6. create your lable in your computer program of your choice and print
7. allow to dry then heat set with iron
8. rinse with bubble jet rinse or any mild detergent
9. dry, trim and sew on quilt.

Luvs you can use paint or pencils (i often use watercolour pencils, colour in first then 'paint' over it with water mixed with fabric medium) Thats the trick to using paint or pencils - you need to paint over them with fabric medium (I dilute mine 2parts water to one part fabric medium) as the medium is the stuff that 'sets' the colour. If painting you mix medium into the paint directly, then paint away, with pencils I go over the design with the medium mix, when dry I iron to confirm the colours are set. medium is at craft stores, I use the Jo Sonja's brand, she makes all the paints used for folk art etc, the medium is used when painting t-shirts etc, hope that makes some sense
