Making throw pillows for Bro -- help? Empty
PostSubject: Making throw pillows for Bro -- help?   Making throw pillows for Bro -- help? EmptySat Nov 07, 2009 10:57 am

I'm trying to figure out how I'm suposed to cut these Transformer pillows I'm gonna make for my brother for his birthday/Christmas (was just gonna wrap that and his wall hanging in the same box and tell him I combined the two.) I was just going to take the cover off another throw pillow I made YEARS ago, measure that and the pillow, and figure it out from there. The only thing is, I just took the cover off. The size is not marked on the pillow, and it's about 15 inches square. Now, I KNOW 15" is not a typical size, so I'm thinking it's either 14" or 16", but I can't figure out which. The ones I got for Bill are 18" but when I measured them, it was 17". I'm thinking the old one may be 16?

The cover on the old ones, with seam allowances is 17" and if I factor those out, it's 16" (dunno what I was doing with it, but like I said, it's been a while since I did this one.)

Can anyone help me figure out the measurements for an 18" pillow?I need to know what size the big square needs to be -- the back is a little easier since I just need two pieces that will overlap.

I find that if the pillow form measures 16, making the pillow 15 works best. If the pillow just fits the form, it looks kind of floppy. I like my pillows really puffy and I want the corners to fit rather than be sloppy.

I would probably cut the size square the pillow says it is plus seam allowance.

Sounds like a plan. I'll have to see about trying that tomorrow.

I'm afraid if I made a throw pillow for my brother, I'd smother him with it!

I think it depends on how you are making it. If you have a top, bottom and a piece that runs around and provides depth, you cut it differntly than if it is done with just front and back.

I disagree slightly with Joann. If it is to be done in 3 sections (counting the back as one), I would cut at 16", assuming that the ignored seam allowances will provide the necessary tightening, The around the edges piece would be depth plus seam allowances.

Alternately, you might want a front and a (2 piece back, without the trouble of sides. In that case, you measure the top plus the depth and cut a square that size, again ignoring seam allowances). You sew front to back, then pinch-fold each corner, so that you can sew across it, clip and have a seam the exact depth of the pillow form. (You actually want it to be 1/2 the depth + front + 1/2 depth, with the seam up the middle of the sides, but lets not get insane here.)

If This is not clear, and you want further help, let me know and I can photgraph the process, since I happen to have a pillow form and pillow cover sitting on my work table waiting to be put together.

PS in my church, for some obscure reason, "Midnight Mass" begins at 10:30 and ends at midnight. azn

Memaw, fortunately THIS brother and I get along now....for the most part. I did find an obnoxious card for his birthday I'm going to give him (hey, Hallmark wanted me to get 3 cards to knock 15 bucks off this Snoopy thing I wanted....so I'm good for birthday cards till about Mother's Day.) It says "Growing up, I was always happy to call you my Brother...Not to mention Butthead, Weenie, Dog-breath, and Dipstick, just to name a few. Happy birthday to an awesome Doofus....I mean "brother.""

Now if this was my YOUNGEST brother, yeah, I might smother him with the pillows....

Maybe next year we can do a pillow swap and you get the number of pillows to equal your siblings for smothering purposes. Making throw pillows for Bro -- help? 227994
