Title: blocks found !!

My mother was given a bunch of material and in this material were some patterns that were from the Windsor Star dated 1930's... also in this parcel of joy was some blocks that were done.. only 25 of them!! (sarcastically speaking) plus the material to make more with the templates!!

She didn't know all this was in there.. so now I have inherited these treasures.. now I have had her take off the black emboiderie cause it was so heavy and will redo in a lighter color just thought you would like to take a look I am so amazed.. I love them!!

They are all hand appliqued and I think this is such a lovely pattern.. I feel very fortunate no idea who done them tho.. but I hope she is in quilter heaven looking down and knowing they are well loved..

They are just priceless! I have seen some pieces very much like that among old peoples things. And you are right, there was a lot of heavy black embroidery on those, too. I know you will have a wonderful time with these.

Is "Windsor Star" a newspaper? That pattern look sort of like the ones Cabot and McKey printed in the 30's.

I am so happy that these beautiful blocks fell into good hands. I truly believe that every quilter who passes before her quilts are done, prays that someone will finish them for her. I think as quilters they probably abhorred waste.

Look how thrifty we are. Paws is making a difficult pattern work. Finisher resized a pattern to make her cut strips work so as not to waste them. I undid DH's quilt from a twin size back down to patches (not blocks) to re-do it better. Orphan blocks are turned into charity quilts. We even make quilts from the final scraps so there is little waste.

Our thrift may be due to the cost of fabric, long ago maybe it was due to lack of fabric, but I really think it is just in our nature to use and re-use and not waste.

Betweens, you and your Mom are making a quilter somewhere very ,very happy. It is going to be a beauty.

What a wonderful treasure! I have worked with older pieces like you have there and I know it's kind of weird to say..but you can almost feel the presence of some long gone quilter in the room with you when you work with them. It's a joy to see the actual 30's fabrics and know they aren't repros. I'm sure the original maker is smiling down on you. Enjoy your lucky find!

What a find! Like Christmas in January! This is precisly why I never pass a garage sale without peeking! No doubt these were passed down to someone with no knowledge of how hard their ancestor worked on these or interest in finishing it. How lovely

I had posted a long note after this and it did not appear wonder if I picked the wrong thread when replying!!

Anyways I will try again.. ugh

I have an envelope with the pattern from Laura Wheeler Designs from the "Windsor Daily Star Needlecraft Dept" the postage was a penny!! dated Aug 21 1937.. the pattern is "Bride's Prize"

This pattern has a pinwheel of half circles.. eight wedges around with a big circle in the middle and then in between these there is a heart..this is all pieced even the heart is in 2 to make a block.. I am going to draft it so that we can applique the hearts on after the piecing..

I want to make this quilt as my mothers signature quilt..the hearts are what the visitors of my mothers reception are going to sign and then I will apply them to the quilt.. the large inner circles I will have some pics of her year as a grand family in the fraternal organization she belongs to.

We have picked the heart fabric and I will use muslin for the inner circles so that we can print pics but the half circles all around she want scrappy.. they will be of those wonderful jewel tones she loves so much.. this is exciting we finally found a pattern we can use as her siggy quilt.. I don't know if some of you remember on QT I was looking for a pattern well we found one.. in the nick of time!!

There is a reason why things are sent our way... fate always takes us in the right place even though it may not seem that way at first :D

Oh beautiful deb. thanks for posting pic and sharing. This year I hope to do something with those blocks I was sent by my MIL, the lady who made them never would have imagined that her work would end up all the way down under in australia! From Tallahi Island, Savannah, Georgia to Buffalo River, Victoria, Australia, what a life these blocks have had

Gimpy, that would be a fabulous book, : The Travels and Travails of a Set of Quilt Blocks: My Biography . Maybe a children's book for Laura.

Deb just wondering if you have done anything on these blocks yet? MB could be a great story, blocks riding a "storm at sea", blocks on a 'trip around the world", etc etc LOL
