Title: PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one!

I just finished putting the sleeve on a wall hanging. Just finished and thinking I'd run to Home Depot for a piece of wood to run in it. DANG! I put the sleeve on the side, not the top. Frog Stitch and start over.

No, you aren't alone! I've done it more than once, :whistling: fortunately they were very small wall-hangings and it was easy to tear out the sleeve and start over...

I did that on the last wallhanging... put the sleeve on the bottom... I was so excited to be done and what a bummer when I realized I had to rip and resew... :1087:

Yeah, I've done it more than once; it's kind of hard when you have a cat and a puppy who both insist on "playing" around me when I'm doing quilty stuff.

:idiot2:Ok....I'm making a throw for a friend.....was gonna be pinwheel, but I realized it's now......ummmmmmm.....square in a square with triangles?....it's really pretty, so I left it. Realized after I'd done all the squares....that's what I get for piecing when I'm tired and it's late. But...it's bugging me...haha. Anyone ever pieced all the squares and realized you did it wrong...but it looks good the wrong way, so you left it? I'm guessing a quilter will know, but the girl getting the quilt won't.

Gosh, I have sewed a zipper on upside down too. Also have the zipper pull on the inside of the garment instead of the outside. I still occasionally goof up and sew wrong side to right side together. :crazy2:

All of those things happen to everyone, I think. One time a group of us were making costumes together for a sci fi convention. One of the group made a perfectly lovely Star Trek tunic, then inexplicably started yelling. The rest of us could not figure out why she was yelling. It turned out that she had set in 3 sleeves, 2 right, one left. When we finally got up off the floor, we tried to figure out HOW she had managed it. The answer is I still don't know.

The reason I am on line instead of my sewing machine at the moment is that I just finished cutting on my seam line. Grumble-Schnart!

That's when I need a long break. How about when you're cutting 2-1/2 inch squares and then realize the last 3 or 4 were 3-1/2. I've learned to put a post-it note or a little piece of tape on the line so I don't forget. It doesn't help that when I'm doing a bunch of little cuts like that, I usually do so while at work and I'm chatting with the group over lunch. Or I'm doing it while watching TV.

No...you aren't the only one. I read my cutting measurement wrong today and cut all my 1/2 square triangles 1/4" too small... :1087: So now I have a different block than I intended...but I think it will be ok.

The first one is what it should have looked like. The second one is what it ended up like (Fabrics/colors are not what I used!)

Bearfoot, you are very creative. I haven't been quilting that long and am not that creative, so once I cut wrong, it's gone. I'll have to see what happens when I cut a booboo and see if I can think out of the box.

Definitely you aren't the only one! I was just part of a President's Challenge and there were labels in the wrong place, backings on upside down and I was just making pinwheel blocks that didn't satisfy. I decided to re-do with paper piecing. Well, they aren't pinwheels anymore. I'm going to come up with my own name for them.

Bearfoot , happy accidents are always fun....
Now I have one for you , doing my first pinwheel quilt, I kept ripping out and resewing just to get a color where I wanted it....where all I really had to do .....IS TURN THE PINWHEEL THE OTHER WAY! :1087: :1087: :1087: :tickedoff:

I never had it happen before,,till now,,it's new paper unless it's been sitting at the store for awhile,,do those have experiation dates? it's not left on long, maybe a week,, how do you get them off the material? anyone else have this problem? helpppppp bonnie

I once decided to use a stripe in a paper pieced block. It was a fat quarter. I cut up the whole fat quarter trying to get it lined up right. Never did get it right.

Uh, oh. I'll bet I know what happened. The new and improved freezer wrap now has a plastic film - sort of like saran wrap. The original freezer wrap had a wax coating on it. Check the box when you go to buy freezer wrap so you can avoid the plastic film one (which by the way is more expensive and not suitable for applique. I use a lot of freezer wrap so I buy a few at a time when I see the original product. They didn't discontinue it (yet).

uh oh! I just bought a new roll of freezer paper. I've been using quite a bit lately and was running low. I just went and checked..and phooey! Mine is the plastic coated. :tickedoff: As soon as this snow clears I'm heading out on a shopping trip to look for the older version! I'm SO glad this was brought to our attention..or I'd be sitting here just as confused as Bonnie when I started using it. I always iron mine to the TOP of the fabric.

OK..so..I thought I better take a good look at the old box of freezer paper I have so I know what to look for in the store. It is exactly the same as the new box! The old box is at least 2-3 years old..and says plastic coated..just like the new box. I opened the new box and decided to test it to see if it works the same. It does..except I think it might stick a little better? That might be because it's a new box?

Bonnie..I don't know what may have caused your problem..except that it might just be one of those weird things that happens? Did it happen on more than one fabric? Could it be a weird reaction to a dye used in the fabric..or an iron that was too hot? To remove it..I guess it depends on how bad it is. If not too bad..I would scratch at it a little with a pin and see if it comes off..or wet it and scrape with your fingernail?

Well, that proves I am not going nuts. My freezer paper is very old, and it is plastic coated, and that is what I have always used. I haven't had any problems with it. In fact, I think wax paper would mess up the fabric worse than plastic. It would melt into the fibers instead of peeling off. I can't think why yours melted off in spots and stuck to the fabric. Where was it stored? When you look at a piece of the freezer paper, does it appear to be warped or "bubbled up" in places?

Well, to be honest, I always wondered why we could press plastic coated freezer paper onto our fabric without it ruining the fabric. It was a kind of weird that you could use it this way. I guess that was one of the few times it just didn't work.

I wondered HOW someone figured they could use freezer paper for templates? I wouldn't think to try to iron something plastic coated to fabric..but it works!

I do not know the answer to that!

Here is another observation. I have found the secret to getting all the paper off the back of a paper pieced block: all you need to remember is to make lots of mistakes and pick out the stitching many many times. The perforation of the paper will make it very easy to tear away from the block. This is my main method.

I've heard if you wet the paper it comes out a lot easier. That might be OK for one block..but I sure wouldn't want to wet a Queen sized quilt and have it draped over my lap as I picked out the paper.
I have found that the PPing has made it so I can piece patterns I wouldn't have touched if I had to make templates and sew the pieces. It makes me really admire those old New York Beauties..and Pine Burrs..and Mariner's Compass quilts that were done so long ago!
Isn't it amazing the things that Folks have figured out to make our piecing so much easier? This is a good time to be a quilter!

My mistake is using printer paper. It is tough stuff. I will go find something of a cheaper quality, like tablet paper, so I can tear it off there. Yes, I fold and crease all the lines first, and I stitch close together, and so on and so forth, but it is still difficult, especially in those little pointy corners.. :tickedoff:
