suggestions for a wedding present for my brother and his wife to be. I want a quilt that would mean something (other than the hand made aspect) but am not sure I am up for a wedding rings quilt. What would you do?

I was commissioned to make a wall hanging for a Wedding gift a few years ago. It was an off white background and had two rings intersected..like the Double wedding Ring. Those segments were pieced with lt. blue fabrics like were used in the wedding and appliqued down. In the center of the rings I embroidered..With This Ring I Thee Wed..and had their names and the date of the wedding. It was about the size of a pillow sham. Something along those lines..or something that can be framed and hung on the wall would be nice?

Using the theme and/or colors from the wedding is a really good place to start like Finisher did. Also personalizing it with names and dates. A photo transfer of the couple in the center would also be nice.
The main thing is to make it with love and do not stress out over it.

I made a DWR for my son and DIL...it's in my album....and boy was it ever a lot of work! DS made a big deal about it but DIL (and the D is not for darling) hardly looked at it! I agree don't stress over it...keep it simple, make it with love and hope they appreciate it.

I have not one, but 3 DWRs in the UFO pile, I am making the third one (2/3 done) as quilt as you go. I made the individual wedge shapes oversized, because I wanted to get done eventually. I hope to have it done for our quilt show in August. My background is bandana fabric, my rings are cut from old denim and are raw edge appliqued onto the background, instead of pieced. It will still make a rather time consuming quilt. The others are for wedding quilts for kids who are not yet out of elementary school, so there is no rush. There are simpler patterns that cut the rings as 4 arcs each. Those are much faster. If you really want to do a regular DWR, you might look at
www.flynnquilts.com John has die cut DWR kits, as I recall.
Having said all that, I think almost any quilt YOU make for them should be well recieved. If the element of surprise is not what you are after, I would suggest talking it over with them and getting their ideas about color scheme, if nothing else. I offered my firstborn a DRW, but what he wanted was black, grey and white stars, so that is what I made.
