Title: Measure once..cut twice?
Post by: finisher on January 01, 2008, 12:49:02 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that the holidays are over I was ready to jump into a new project. I decided to start on the Pine Burr quilt I've wanted to make for a long time. This Summer I got a pattern with paper foundations for the burrs..thinking it would make the piecing so much easier. I opened the pattern and read through the directions. It said to cut strips for the foundation piecing 1 3/4" wide. When paper piecing I don't like to scrimp on the fabric , so I decided to cut my strips at 2". I cut a strip from 81 fat quarters or yardage. I decided to cut the strips into squares, then in half on the diagonal so piecing would be a breeze. That's a lot of cutting.( 8 hours worth to be exact...but would streamline the paper piecing) Sooo...I sat down yesterday to piece a block. To my horror I found that my pieces were too small! If I was extremely careful and precise..I just covered the foundation with nothing to spare. There was nothing to trim away but a thread or two. That's waaay to close for me! The 1 3/4" must have been a typo? OK..so now I have all of this fabric cut..and it's too small. DH asks.."why don't you just throw that fabric away and recut more?" WHUT? Are you crazy? :santa_shocked: I can't just throw this fabric away! That's crazy talk!!! Soo..I went to the copy shop and printed the foundations at 85%. I started to do the paper piecing..and it was fitting much better...until it was time to assemble the block. Now the marked seam allowances were less than 1/4". This block has curved pieces. Most of it is on the bias..so my seam allowances had to be exact. I couldn't use my 1/4" foot as a guide. Eyeballing it could be a problem. I got one block together..then decided to add the correct seam allowance to the reduced pieces. I pieced a second block. Eureka! That was it! Now I have to make more blocks..because they are smaller..plus the cost of printing the reduced foundations. At this point I'm not sure if I am penny wise..or pound foolish? It seems the cost will be the same whether I would have recut the strips..or used what I had cut but need more of, plus the cost of printing! DOH!!! :santa_cheesy:

Finisher--I would wager it was a typo in the pattern!!! I know what that's like.
Like you--I could NOT throw my fabric away :santa_sad:. Are we cheap or what!

There is an old saying: "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

I would have done just what you did......reduce the size of the pattern.

I have cut things out before......following the instructions.........only to find they were all wrong. I could just scream when that happens. Throw the fabric away? NO WAY. Cheap? NO, just frugal. I throw nothing away that I might find a use for later on. Basically I'm just talking about fabric and clothes.

If there is an address on that pattern they would be getting a "piece' of my mind and I wouldn't "skimp" on it either.

I know typos happen but I just can't believe that no one else has ever run into a problem and asked about it. They need to make an effort to send out corrections. Fabric is not cheap and darn it, neither is our time!

You're a better quilter than I am Finisher cause I would of tossed them in a corner and sulked for days thinking I had messed something else up. ( Makes you wonder how many people who bought this pattern did exactly that? :santa_undecided: )

So here is a great lesson for all-TEST your pattern before you cut it all out!

Hope it all works out for you Finisher.

I would put all of those pieces in the scrap barrel, to be added to another project. Then I'd start over, right after yelling at the people who printed the pattern. ARGH!!!

I just looked up that pattern on my QP program. Yes, I would definitely want to paper piece that one. If you like, I will send you the pattern I have, just PM me the size. I bet Quilters Cache as the pattern too.

Hmm. I just looked the name up in the Collector's Dictionary of Quilt Names and Patterns and got 2 different patterns. Neither of those has any curved piecing so I am assuming those two are not it.

I have a similar saying..."when life gives you limes...ask for Tequila and salt!"

I would probably have used the strips on a Jelly Roll quilt and cut new ones for this one, but I wouldn't be happy about it! Fabric is expensive...and I don't have the time or the cash to mess up a whole quilt!

I just had to vent about this one! Thanks for your offer to give me the correct size MaryNel. I have it figured out now. :santa_wink: The one I'm doing has a center that is like the center of a Robbing Peter to pay Paul block..then has 4 cones with curved bottoms and sawtooth edges that radiate out from it. Then it has diamonds to connect block to block..with half diamonds on the edges. Once I get a couple more blocks done I'll post a photo. I'm not going to set the diamonds in until I decide for sure which fabric I will use for setting..and the placement of the blocks. I have a couple of options.
I know I have plenty of fabric..and could cut new strips..but the practical, thrifty, stingy, and stubborn part of me wouldn't let me! HaHa

Mary..You have the best advice of all! Make a TEST block before cutting all of the fabrics! :santa_rolleyes: When will I learn that? Doh! I was sure that cutting everything 1/4" bigger than the directions said to..I'd have smooth sailing.

I agree about doing a test block. I always do. Of course, my general suspicious nature is why I rarely do mystery quilts. It's one thing if I mess up, it's quite another if someone else gives me the wrong directions.

Finisher, it sounds as though the version of pine burr you are trying to do is the one on QP, which is also, the best looking version in my opinion.

Which reminds me Paws, how is your "Great Directions---Not!" quilt coming along. Have you been able to work on it any?

The worst thing in my opinion about situations like this is this: what if someone fairly new to quilting gets a pattern with wrong directions. They may not even know there is a problem until they try to put it all together. Then they will be really disappointed and we could lose a quilter. Publishers should be extra careful with instructions and patterns.

Good Morning Mary--I am working on it :santa_afro:. Starting to put it on the wall board as I get the blocks re-sized. Actually it is looking pretty good. I will NOT put it out of sight till it's done.
Think I will send a pic. to the company and ask them if they don't think it looks better when everything matches. I WILL FINISH IT--YES--I WILL FINISH IT!!!!!

LOL I love the idea of sending the company a picture! That would be so great!

I am hanging in on DH's John Deere quilt too. It wasn't done for Christmas but I showed him the top and he really seemed to like it. I refuse to put it away and I will get it on the frame to quilt this month. I need to do Gimpy's and Admin's blocks since they have a deadline and then the quilt is next.

I guess a certain amont of stick-to-it-ness is necessary or we would never have a finished quilt would we? :santa_wink:

I fear I'm not much of a "hanger-inner" - with my lack of quilting experience (or, if truth be told, lack of patience!) - I'm afraid if I ran into that much trouble the project would get shoved way to the back of UFOs. I just love your attitude TxMaryQuilts. I'm NOT being smart, I'm agreeing with you. I hate waste. I'm old enough to know everything cost money. Of course some things more that others, but still money. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't have money to waste! I also wasn't brought up to waste and neither were our girls.

Write the company a letter? I never thought of that. Calling them: YES.......but only after I've calmed down. I agree they need to know about the mistake.

Nice work. This is a slightly differnt pattern than the one QP has. There's has more curve in the center area. I had not tought of doing this in various colors of burrs. I like the effect a whole lot. I can certainly see why you wanted to make it.

Isn't it funny how patterns can vary MaryNel? The pattern I have for this one has the burrs all of the same color and navy setting diamonds. I wanted to make the burrs scrappy because I love being able to use so many fabrics. I just love scrappy! I think I'm going to set this with the fabric that is pinned up behind the blocks. I'm thinking I may want to add a border and put some applique in it? :santa_rolleyes:
Now that I have reduced the pattern so I can use my precut fabrics..the blocks are quite a bit smaller. They finish at around 10". I sure wouldn't want to piece this without the paper foundations! :santa_shocked:

Originally I was going to use the off white..but I think I might use the pale gold print I have pinned behind the blocks on my design board. I'm thinking that would be a good border color for the applique to go on. Or..I could use a lighter shade of the cinnamon pinks..or brown...or gold? I think I'll play around once I have more blocks done and see what looks right to me. I sort of lean towards the pink...but then it would look too feminine so the pale gold might be better? When I do the applique I want to do sunflowers and pomegranites..and vines with leaves. Whatever I can think of that will pull the colors of the burrs into the borders.

Sometimes I just gotta put it aside for whatever time it takes--preferbly not "out of sight" though. Throw it away is NOT an option. I don't accept defeat easily--and neither does my check book.

Finisher--how's your "Pine Grrr" quilt coming along???????????

I've got 14 blocks done now. I spent the past two weekends out of town at my DS's and spent most of one day basting a quilt to go in the hoop..so I'm not as far along as I'd like. It takes about 3 hours to make each block. I'd like to get 2 blocks a day done..but life keeps getting in the way? ::)
How is your "don't worry about squaring things up" quilt coming along Paws? That would drive me around the bend. I need things to match up and be precise.

Well Finisher--it's still out and in sight--try to do a few blocks every once in a while--if I put it away--then I am sunk. Just been "unnecessary" work. You keep chugging on yours and I will too!!!! You are going to have a "few" hours invested in yours too.

WE'LL MAKE IT--WE'LL MAKE IT--HOPE WE MAKE IT!!!
Been cutting some squares and strips for Golo's Trading Patches.

Have a baby quilt that's "pushing" right now. Oh the things we get ourselves into!!!!

LOL..I can't put mine away..I won't pull it back out. ;) I want to start the applique on the Country Sunshine quilt Deb told us about..and Deb told me about a group that's doing it as a BOM..but I won't let myself start it. It's going to be my reward for sticking with the Pine Grrr... ;D

When I first started quilting I never squared up blocks...didn't know about it...and everything always lined up. Now I have all the special tools and rulers and hold my breathe every time I line the blocks up. lol

I finally got the appliqued borders on the Pine Burr. I was inspired by a border on a quilt in Kim Diehl's Simple Blessings by the name of Geese in the Garden. I added tulips..and reworked the placements until I had what I wanted for this quilt. It's hard for me to take a photo of large quilts..but I did my best. 😉

It seems that you started your Pine "Grr" quilt just a little while ago, and Now Just Look what you have done with it! That is just beautiful. I think I will want to applique something on my next pieced quilt. It makes it so much more elegant and gorgeous.

Do NOT...I repeat...Do NOT send it to Paws....... send it to me. I will even send money for the postage and insurance. :whistling: (as if insurance would be of any value)

Hahahah..you girls sure made my day! :2funny: I made it because I've wanted to make a Pine Grr..I mean Burr for years. AND I wanted a brown and pink quilt..which this has a lot of. I also decided as I worked on it that I wanted to do some sort of an applique border. Then..the perfect storm happened. I got Kim Diehl's Simple Blessings book and saw her applique border with sun flowers and thought that would be a great way to bring the brown out to the border. I added the tulips to her design to bring the coral out to the edges too. This quilt has been a problem child all along. I had the applique done on the borders and once I sewed them on I didn't like the way the corners looked. Soo..rip it rip it..and redid it. I'm happy with it now. :afro: Ya'll can fight it out..let me know who wins? I think Paws is going to have the jump on you..she lives the closest... if she's coming for lunch too.

Finisher, that is stunning. I am so impressed. Your applique skills are just over the top. I still can't believe you just started appliqueing last summer with those Hawiian blocks.

Your piecing is also superb. There just aren't words to express how pretty this quilt is.You should be ever so proud. 😃

Thank you Mary Ann. This one has simple applique. Nothing fussy. Big easy shapes. I didn't just learn to applique last Summer though. 😉 I just learned NEEDLE TURN last Summer. I've been doing applique with freezer paper on top or basting the shapes first for about 25 years.

For a minute there..I thought I had tricked the other gals into quilting it..but no go. :2funny:

Well, your 25+ years syre pay off. 😃

No, I don't think anyone is going to "volunteer" to quilt your work. Talk about intimidating.
I am sure most people would freeze up at the thought of trying to match your skill. I know I wouldn't want to. I am perfectly content just oohing and aahing over your work. Smitten
