Title: Pre-finishing edges?

Hi Everyone!

I just finished a wallhanging, cut the batting and backing slightly larger than the top and I want to handquilt it...I was wondering if anyone prefers to seam up the raw edges of the top. I know someone who serges her edges so they won't fray while she works on her quilts but my machine won't serge (Viking 850) so I'm considering doing a zigzag around the edges. What works for you??

TIA!

My background is cloting construction. I tend to zig zag things because I hate frayed edged. Now lets see what the REAL hand quilters say.

I don't do anything to the edges. I have the backing and batting a bit larger than the top..and all three layers are basted together with thread..so the raw edge of the top doesn't get any rubbing to cause it to fray. I suppose if you pin baste..it might be a problem? I dunno.

I do the same as Finisher.

Marynel,
I am from garment sewing too...but with a quilt NO I do not finish the edges....they tend to do just fine without.....
I used to put binding on then quilt....don't do that any more but will make the binding and tuck it away until time to bind.....

I use a long machine basting stitch or a long loose zig-zag if the edges seem to be raveling. Normally I don't need to do that.
