Just a little background altho I think most of you are aware.
I tore the ligaments off my dominant thumb several years ago.  I have problems handling large items, heavy items, bulky items and teeny weenie items.  Sigh. Also I have a condition called "Essential Tremor" that makes me shake and jerk when trying to do fine work.  So quilting has been stitch in the ditch for me. And not well at that! I have tried drawing out simple designs and still can't seem to do a decent job.  I can only do small projects too.

But. . . . I can do paper piecing! Not intricate patterns, simple ones.  One day I thought "how can it be I can PP but not do simple quilting designs."  So here is what I came up with that works well for me.

A simple design is cut from paper and pinned in place on my sandwiched project:

I stitch around the paper.  Yes, occasionally I will "nip" the edge. doh

And the finished motif:  Sewn3w's quilting method Tute_410

No idea why the paper works for me and drawing out a design doesn't.  But Hey! it works and I am going with it.  Thumbup

Instead of pinning the paper pattern, try cutting it out of freezer paper and then ironing it in place. You can reuse the patterns a few times. I have done this when I wanted a different pattern.

When I started machine quilting, that is the technique I used. I am glad that you have a technique that works for you.

Something to do with hand/eye coordination.

Bifocals really messed me up for a long time. Then I accidentally got paint on one finger that wouldn't come off. And discovered it was helping! I painted one fingernail bright green for several weeks and everything improved dramatically. It was like my brain didn't know where my hands and fingers were. Cured!

Doesn't really matter why that works and drawing doesn't, just glad that it does work for you. clap Your patterns are limitless thanks to the computer and printer. Thanks for sharing, never know when a tip like this might benefit someone.
