x block ruler

I recently read about these rulers and can find patterns designed for using them but I would really like to know how they are used. I am intrigued and I would like to hear and see what others have done with them

I have a set of these, but haven't had a chance to use them yet. Basically, they are a square template with lines that are a little skewed. It is hard to describe the templates.
