Subject: Quilt basting gun? Wed Feb 12, 2020 6:09 pm
I just came across the term and looked it up, never heard of it, turns out its one of the tagging guns they use to attaching price tickets to clothing etc. Now Im curious, has anyone got one? Tried one? It looks like there could be a lot of movement as the length of the shaft on the plastic tie is more than a quilt - what do you think? Just me and curiosity

I had one a hundred years ago, when I bought All The Gadgets.
You're right, the tag thing is too long and it didn't hold the layers together well. I tried for a while going in then out , like putting a pin in, and that worked, but it was a royal pain trying to quilt around them and then clipping the things out without damaging my quilt top.

Since I used them for tagging merchandise when I worked at a department store as a teen I never thought they would make good basting tools. I didn't want to put a hole that big into my quilt tops. And I knew the length of the shaft would allow movement. Baffles me that they are still selling them.

I also dont like the idea of all those little bits of plastic all over the floor when you have to cut them off, blow that for a joke, my cats would eat them

I tried a couple and did not like them. A friend just loved hers, which was one sold for merchandizing. On mine, I got jams and tangled plastic bit. GRR Now that basting spray comes in a less toxic form, IMHO, that is a much better way to go.

I have used the basting spray a couple of times, I have to wait for a calm, not windy day as I set up a table outside and do it out there, standing upwind of the spray if I can. I can see the value of it and like no pins but have had issues with it causing the surface of batting to pucker/wrinkle. I recently bought a 2nd can 50% off as its not cheap and will keep giving it a go, especially with wall hangings

I have not had the pucker problem. I work with a second person but have had some problems getting the other one to understand "straight and smooth"

It seems to be an issue with the roll of batting I have, we think its the loft on one side and Im stuck with a whole roll so its just got to be dealt with. I found ironing it seems to smooth it out to quilt, can iron it as needed prior to trying to stitch it
