| Hi, I did a little sewing today, some more on the winter quilt, put the borders together, got the top and bottom on, trimmed the corner snowflake blocks and sewed them to the side borders now I have a problem (and not the first Ive run into with this rotten pattern). The side borders are exactly 1" to long, both of them, I double checked seam widths etc etc but no way around it, both side pieces exact same length and both 1" too long to fit properly (why am I so not suprised) The question is, how do I lose an inch? Only think I can think to do is stitch another 1/8" along each triangle seam, 8 seams would equal the inch. Any other suggestions? Here is a pic of the pattern layout so you can see how the corner blocks need to line up etc _________________ "My will is mine.....I shall not make it soft for you" Aeschylus, Agamemnon

| Everything should be fine if you make the inner border ( the darker blue one) larger by 1/2" all around. Sew all the inner border on before you add the outer border. Double-check my math Helen (and anyone else), but that's my advice! _________________ Perfection is the enemy of progress

| Thats a good idea FiberBabble, thanks. Being I was using stash and scraps of course I dont believe I will have enough of the dark blue to add another half inch but perhaps I can do another colour like red or something, perhaps white and reverse the triangle border so the white triangles butt up to the white 1/2" additional border. You have me thinking again, I got so cranky my brain turned off in disgust! _________________ "My will is mine.....I shall not make it soft for you" Aeschylus, Agamemnon

| I think Fiberbabble's answer is the best one.
If I figured right...if you take an extra 1/8th seam you will end up 1" short d/t you are using 1/8" off EACH fabric. You would have to take 1/16th" wider seam. You might want to check your 1/4" foot to make sure it is actually 1/4" and not a hair (scant 1/4")...it would make a difference on something like this. | |

| My suggestion was a second inner border, maybe of the red of the sled color. Widening the inner border is probably a better idea. | |

| Ummm....... am I looking at this wrong? Gimpy says it is only the side border that is 1" too long. . If she adds 1/2" all around wouldn't that make the top/ bottom borers not wide enough then ? as I said ...am I looking at the picture in the wrong manner ? Not good on the maths me . I look and visualize ! |

| I was thinking the same as Henny. Top and bottom borders are on and are okay. Just sides are too long. So need to take off top and bottom border, add 1/2" at top and 1/2" at bottom, and stick top and bottom borders back on. Then the sides should work. _________________ TxMaryQuilts

| I unpicked the top and bottom triangle borders last night. I tested red and white fabric for the extra 1/2" border and decided on the white, the red was bright and cheery but closed it in too much. With the white I will reverse the triangle borders when I stitch them on so the white triangles butt up to the white inner border - opposite of what the diagram shows.
BearFoot I checked the seam measurements (I only use the one foot) and they are exactly 1/4". I went over every seam because I figured I must have been out there but it wasnt, its just frustrating.
HP and TxMary I see what your saying too, if I add 1/2" all the way around then the top and bottom will be short an inch. If I just increase the inner border on the top and bottom only then it will lengthen the quilt by an inch and then the sides will fit. I might be able to scrape enough out of the original blue to do just the top and bottom even if I have to join some pieces.
Im just getting so over this quilt, its been frustrating many times _________________ "My will is mine.....I shall not make it soft for you" Aeschylus, Agamemnon

| HP & TxM have it right - I didn't retain the part that said only two of the borders that were off. Just now as I was scrolling through for the hammer guy it occurred to me that it wouldn't be too out of place to have a "We Speak English Here" smiley. Not because we don't want other people to visit us, but because a) sometimes I doughnut real reel gud, and b) the translating that has to occur between Australian, Canadian, Midwestern, Southern and all the other Englishes this group speaks... _________________ Perfection is the enemy of progress

| LOL so that raises a question FB, which of us is actually speaking English??? You should hear Laura, she speaks some words in an american manner like "Anty" (aunty) whereas aussies say "Arent-ie" and says other words with a definate aussie slant. Her teachers think she has a cute accent. Maybe we need little smiley signs as part of our signatures to declare what we are speaking? "I speak Aussie", "I speak East Coast", "I speak Southern" etc etc Hehehehe I found a free smiley sign generator here and added one to my siggy, you can make your own HERE _________________ "My will is mine.....I shall not make it soft for you" Aeschylus, Agamemnon

| I was down in Florida one weekend, St Augustine, walked into an antique store and the owner (who was British) called out "Hi, can I help you" all I said in response was "Just looking thanks" she came straight over and said "Queensland drawl right?!" she shocked the pants of me, Id been living in Queensland for 25yrs LOL. Turned out she had a friend who was a queenslander she recognised the accent. Not everyone in Australia has a drawl, differs on where you are from/live etc and no one has a drawl like the southerners in the states do! There are apparently 3 types of accent in australia, all I know is you can pick when people are from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth usually LOL _________________ "My will is mine.....I shall not make it soft for you" Aeschylus, Agamemnon
