AS I was frog stitching my current project, I realized that I have a technique we have not discussed. It is something I was told never to do, because of the danger. I have been doing it for 18 years with no problems. For long seams that need to be taken out, I use a rotary blade that I have replaced. I hold the seam open, after using the seam ripper for about 1/2". I cut the seam using the rotary blade, held in my fingers. Maybe I need to take a picture of this technique. I might add that I have only been cut by very sharp tools twice in life. When I was a child, a neighbor brat yelled, "BOO!" in my ear as I was carving some wood. The other was when someone right behind me yelled as I was trimming wall paper. I needed stitches both of those times. I have been warned about my blade technique, but it works really well for me.

I use the blade still in the rotary cutter, something that makes some of my fellow quilters at quilt camp very jittery.  Its been thirty years since I got my first rotary cutter and I've been doing it ever since with no mishaps to fabric or fingers.

Marynel, you might consider putting some stout tape on one side of the blade just in case someone yells BOO!

I have been using these for several years. I got them at the dollar store. I think they are an eyebrow tool. I hold the seam apart, lay it on one side and go! It works great an very long seams.

Great tips ladies...thanks! I just read about using a throw away razor on the reverse side of appliques and embroidery to rip that out. Put a tennis ball or baseball behind the front of the design you are ripping off and "shave" the wrong side stitching. Watched a video...interesting.

Old fashioned single edged razor blades work really well.
